Halloween Night with Willie Nelson and Paul Simon

When reading Joe Nick Patoski’s Willie biography, you’ll find an interesting story about the world premiere of Willie’s landmark album, Red Headed Stranger on Halloween night 1975.

Me: “I read in Willie’s biography that you promoted the world premiere of The Red Headed Stranger at the Sheperd Drive In.”

Dahr says, “Yeah I did. That was the first concert which led up to a major end of the year concert. That was a pretty important step. That night, Paul Simon came out to watch Willie and they sang The Boxer. It was really good. They got up and somehow Willie’s band played The Boxer with Paul Simon and it was really good.”

Dahr on The Red Headed Stranger: “Willie just took the bits and pieces and stitched it together into a complete package. The whole thing’s great. When you’re finished with that record, you feel like you’ve been to a good movie. It takes you to all these different places and it feels like it was all meant to be. It’s real cowboy music…the tone of the guitar and everything.”
