“Murder is always a mistake – one should never do anything one cannot talk about after dinner” – Oscar Wilde

After our 7 chilling blues murder songs post, I felt country should get a say. As with the blues songs, betrayal seems to be the primary reason for murder. The country list relies on a number of classic tunes, many which have been covered numerous times. I highlighted and linked to lesser known (but excellent) versions. To hear the songs, click on the song hyperlink.

Transfusion Blues – murder, wild eyed drug use, running to Mexico, and prison are well known themes for the murder ballad troubador, Johnny Cash.

The Banks of the Ohio - oft covered (this version’s by Kristin Hersh) murder ballad will have you thinking twice before turning down a marriage proposal.

Pretty Polly – an old murder ballad, you’ll find a wide variety of lyrics for this one. This Dock Boggs version tells of a Pretty Polly lured into the forest, killed, and buried in a shallow grave. The moral of the story? If I can’t have you–nobody can.

A classic final line throws down, “Who taught who the cold hard facts of life?”

He won’t give an alibi because, on the night of the murder, he was getting down and dirty with his best friend’s wife. Nobility wins out. He’d rather die than admit the truth.

Sometime, in the near future, we’ll compile another list of country murder songs.

Today, on the Justin Wayne Show, Larry Fulcher talks with Justin about music, how he got started, and how he got started in Titty Bingo.

On getting into his first band: “I guess, at about the age of 15, one of my friends had a band and I really didn’t play an instrument although I sang in the church choir. They needed a singer, and being in a band, sounded like a cool idea. It was a better way to meet girls than being on the football team.”

When Larry made the decision to spend his life in music: “In ’67, I went to the Monterrey Pop Festival and that kind of cemented what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”

On creating space around music: “What you don’t play sometimes is more important than what you do.”

On playing with Titty Bingo: “It’s fun man…it’s fun. It’s kind of like being in a garage band. We just go in, set up and go for it…and laugh a lot. I think that’s the secret to Bingo, we laugh a lot.”

There’s much more in the interview. You’ll hear rare cuts and a wide range of music from Larry’s career. Plus. there’s a couple great stories about songs Larry’s written.
