Wondering about Larry Fulcher’s other six of 12 great bass players? In case you missed the first six, here’s a refresher.
- Jimmy Garrison–best known for his work with John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. Here’s a clip of Garrison playing with the John
Coltrane Quartet. ’nuff said.
- Marcus Miller–Miller has played with numerous greats including Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, and Elton John. Watch Run For Cover and dig Miller’s groove.
- Darryl Jones–plays with the Rolling Stones and has recorded with Madonna, Sting, and Peter Gabriel. Here’s a bass solo he does with the Rolling Stones project.
- Chuck Rainey–the list of with who Chuck Rainey has played is long. Let this video clip serve as a testament to his talent. Had to drop in this Rainey gem, too – Rock Steady by Aretha Franklin
- Ronnie Baker–played with MFSB and the Trammps.
- Any James Brown bassist–how about Fred Thomas, Bootsy Collins, or Ray Brundidge? Here’s Fred Thomas on Papa Don’t Take No Mess. Bootsy Collins drives SexMachine and Bernard Odum breaks out in a Cold Sweat?
Who would you add to this list of great bass players?

I’ve got a couple bass players to add to Larry’s list, starting with Larry himself. Jack Bruce, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Tal Wilkenfeld and Victor Wooten would all make my list too. Almost have to go to a top 100 list to stop having names pop into your head though.
