Feedback, whether accidental or purposeful, can bring an intensity and excitement to a song. Often overused these days, feedback can end up being a lazy annoyance or a typical cliche (like an extended drum solo).
Back in earlier times, feedback was usually frowned upon by recording engineers and squashed like an annoying picnic bug. Thank goodness, a few pioneers made it to final vinyl.
